FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Artist/Producer, Nabin Laskar, announces the release of the remix EP for Brooklyn Shanti's "Sobriety" via label Someplace Called Brooklyn, available for pre-save currently and download/streaming on all DSPs September 9, 2022 courtesy of Soulspazm Digital Distribution.

"Sobriety" is a duet between Laskar and Someplace Called Brooklyn label-mate, Circe Muse. It first appeared on the 2020 Brooklyn Shanti release, Yoga Trap, (Someplace Called Brooklyn) which was scheduled to coincide with the festival release of feature length documentary film Nasima: The Most Fearless, Directed and Produced by filmmaker / photographer Heather Kessinger for PhotoSF / FIreglory, in Spring 2020. Although Yoga Trap was commercially released, the Nasima film’s festival launch was delayed until early 2022 due to pandemic festival cancellations. Since its world premiere in late 2021, the film has won awards at festivals reaching across India, the Middle East, throughout Europe and Canada, even being awarded “Best Documentary” at Atlanta Docufest this year.

While Laskar’s journey embodies the story of being the first Bengali in hip hop culture to rise to international acclaim as a rapper/producer and DJ both with the renowned DJ/Producer Sean Dinsmore’s Dum Dum Project and as the creative force behind Brooklyn Shanti; Nasima Akter, Kessinger's subject in the documentary named after her, shares a familiarity: She is the first female Bengali Surfer. Following in suit, Kessinger is the first Director and Producer tracking both of their journeys, and has brought the two young Bengali trend-setters and social icons together, working with them under her The Most Fearless banner.

"The song is aspirational, it’s about the dreams in the real life stories of the people in Heather's film," comments Laskar, "my dreams are Bengali-American driven, but in the song I’m discussing the sobriety of entering into an agreement with yourself where you allow those dreams to come to you at all in the first place, a moment of clarity - that’s where we’re all adjoined in our overarching Bengali, and beyond that, human experiences - I’m trying to talk to all of us from my own personal perspective of sober self-empowerment."

Nasima: The Most Fearless was created from a succinctly feminest perspective. In the studio, co-writer and vocalist, Circe Muse, led the process by first laying down the outline of the song’s foundations in sparsely sung lyrical passages, which in turn created the melody at any given moment. Says Laskar, “First Circe would feel out what part of the song we’re at and then paint in lyrics to create the narrative structure - an emotional underpinning aligned with the film’s story,” he continues, “then she would ask me to fill in the gaps, allowing me the space for me to speak from my heart and experience while she held the reigns of the narrative patterns and chapters of the story, she would cut back in with her voice and shift the moods into the direction she felt necessary.”

"Sobriety" makes its appearance in Kessinger's film at a pinnacle moment on the narrative journey of the characters in her documentary. "Heather's film raises discussion points around things people outside of Bengali culture, specifically in Bangladesh, do not cast a glance towards in most cases," adds Laskar while commenting around his production approach, "I’m mixing what I learned in producing and writing trap music for other artists in Atlanta, so I mixed that approach with the sounds and spiritual underpinnings from South Asian Indian culture with a focus on me defining what Yoga Trap is as a musical genre.”

As the film continues through 2022 on the festival circuit, Laskar and Kessinger have teamed up to create a mixtape series entitled Fearless. A first installment entitled Fearless Volume 01: The Nasima Mixtape is currently in production, featuring an east-meets-west fusion which sees Bollywood, Bengali, and American stars collaborating in a way which has helped define the Brooklyn Shanti sound over the last decade. Fearless Volume 01 is scheduled for release at the beginning of 2023 via PhotoSF and Someplace Called Brooklyn.
